Being All You Can Be
Being All You Can Be
Series: 1 Timothy 4:8-12
Summary: In The Purpose Driven Life, the story is told of Bill Mallory who diligently sought the meaning and purpose of life. Even went to India. No luck. Went into a Chevron Station/Tourist Information place. Sign said “Ask us your questions.” He asked, “What is the meaning and purpose of life?” Answers: I just started to work here., I don’t think that is in the Employees Manual., Smile and wink. Picked up a Customer Relations Response Card and found it to be a credit card application. So he went to the Internet and asked the same question. Answer: First, why do you want to find the meaning and purpose of life: Because you feel worthless, Click here., Because you want to prove your intellectual prowess? Click here. One option had the words of a song by Eminem (M&M): “If you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted – one moment – would you capture it or just let it slip by?” Many would say the purpose of life is to be successful in the eyes of peers: A man’s man or a woman’s woman., An athlete’s athlete; a musician’s musician, a teacher’s teacher. So what is the purpose of life? One answer is found in 1Timothy 4:8-12, which says in essence, “Be All You Can Be.” I know the U.S. Army has that as an advertizing slogan, and did for 20 years, but it was in the Bible first - or at least it seems so to me. Timothy was a young pastor with a deep desire to be all he could be. Paul wrote to him of four positive things to make that happen: be yours, be His, be ours, and be.
